Do I need to take a mineral supplement?

Do I need to take a mineral supplement?

The short answer is, "It depends." It certainly won't hurt. The majority of people can maintain a healthy level of vitamins and minerals in their bodies through their normal, everyday diet. But for varying reasons, some people have mineral deficiencies or choose to take mineral supplements to target specific areas of concern, such as gut health, oxygen transport, growth, development, repair, bone health, cartilage formation, and maintaining cellular membranes.

The primary functions of minerals in the body are:

  • Building strong bones and teeth
  • Controlling body fluids inside and outside cells
  • Turning the food you eat into energy

Mineral supplements tend to be necessary or encouraged with infants and toddlers, women, older adults and those with special medical conditions. During pregnancy, mineral deficiencies including iron, choline, and iodine are especially common and supplements may be recommended.

While choosing food sources carefully and adhering to a strict diet may alleviate the need for mineral supplements, many choose to take supplements for added strength and/or to ensure their mineral intake is sufficient and measurable. Trace mineral supplements, generally consisting of small daily amounts of multiple minerals, can be a safe and simple way to ensure your body's mineral levels are consistent and working in your favor.

While it is possible to have too much, the most common signs of an unhealthy balance of minerals or even overdosing are:

  • Constipation
  • Nausea/diarrhea
  • Headaches
  • Grey tint to skin (especially with iron)

Red Rock Supplements recommends one capful daily of our Trace Minerals + Fulvic Acid, which contains 70+ trace minerals including: Aluminum. Calcium. Carbon. Chromium, Copper, Hydrogen, Iron, Lithium, Magnesium, Manganese, Nitrogen, Oxygen, Phosphorus, Potassium, Silica, Sodium, Sulfur, and Zinc.
