All of Red Rock Supplements products are humic based, but what is humic? The USDA defines humic substances as “a group of complex organic compounds consisting of humic acids, fulvic acids, natural salts of these acids (e.g., calcium humates), and sponge-like substances called humin. Humic substances (which includes humic acids) naturally constitutes a large fraction of the organic matter in soil, and is formed through the process known as “humification.” Humification is the natural conversion of organic matter into humic substances by microorganisms in the soil.”
In simple terms, humic is the resulting compound (dirt like substance) left over from organic matter, such as trees and vegetation, being broken down by microorganisms over the course of hundreds, or even thousands, of years. This humic and fulvic acid rich substance lies just below the surface and has never been compressed. The key to quality humic is what types of matter existing in the area where it was mined/found? How long has it been there? Not every deposit is created equal. For Red Rock Supplements, we found humic deposits on a ranch in central Utah. This deposit has proven to be rich with over 70 trace minerals and high in humic and fulvic acid.
From a distance, a humic deposit looks like normal dirt but upon closer inspection has the appearance and feel of shale or coal. Even large pieces tend to crumble in your hands due to the substance being broken down from solid matter to its current form over many, many years. When broken down even further, humic can be used to supplement plants, animals and humans. This brings up the question “is it good for me?”
Let’s start with plants. Many people add humic mixes to their gardens to support healthy growth. What many do not fully understand is why this works. Different concoctions like humic sprays have been created over the years but humic and fulvic acid are difficult for plants to absorb through the leaves or stem. Where humic substances are most impactful is when added to the soil. The roots have the ability to absorb the many trace minerals, which help to strengthen the plant itself and promote growth. Some people say their tomatoes taste sweeter with humic and fulvic acid supplements–while we cannot confirm nor deny, we have seen some pretty healthy tomatoes.
That leads to humans. Does humic help? Is it healthy? The short answer is yes but it also all depends. As mentioned in a previous post, mineral supplements are not required or completely necessary in all humans. Our bodies can naturally get what they need through a healthy balance diet. But humic’s benefits can be essential to some (infants/toddlers, pregnant women, the elderly, those with mineral deficiencies) and also helpful to others simply looking for additional support for things like building strong bones and teeth, controlling body fluids inside and outside cells, and turning the food you eat into energy. We recommend a capful of our trace mineral product but what is also reassuring is you could drink the entire bottle and outside of maybe stomach irritation or diarrhea you would be fine.
When looking at adding additional humic to your diet, be sure to look for trusted brands, clean/pure product and transparency in the production process. There are over 7,000 vitamin and supplement brands on Amazon US alone and not all are created equal.
